EVGA’s ‘InterView’ dual-screen monitor evokes giddiness

I look at a lot of monitors. So many, in fact, that these days I immediately notice the smallest differences between them. Almost instinctively, I notice the bezel width, whether or not the panel slopes, and how easy the connections options are to access. I don’t say this to brag; it’s just that most monitors look so similar that I’m forced to find the smallest differences just to keep my job exciting.

So please forgive my utter elation and downright giddiness at EVGA’s just-announced InterView Dual Monitor Wallpapers System.

The InterView is a dual-screen monitor with two rotatable 17-inch screens, each with a resolution of 1440×900. The monitors are mounted on a desktop stand that includes four USB ports, a mic input, a built-in Webcam, and a DMS video connection. The latter allows the video signal to be pumped to both monitors, thanks to the included DMS-to-dual-DVI cord.

Each dual monitor background can rotate back 180 degrees to face the opposite direction, and according to EVGA, the onscreen image automatically inverts to appear right side up.

Other specs include a 500:1 contrast ratio, 8ms pixel response time, and a 200 candelas per square meter brightness.

We just got the InterView in this week, so look for a slideshow soon and a full review of the $649 display(s) soon after that. I now return to my extremely giddy testing.

IPhone Closer to China Launch With Network Tests

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 4:11 pm

Apple has applied for a Chinese network access license for the iPhone, an important step that could lead the phone to a China launch by early next year, analysts said Monday.

Apple has held months of talks with China Unicom, the country’s favored carrier for an iPhone deal, in search of an inroad to China’s huge market. But those talks have been hindered by disputes such as what proprietary software to pre-load on the handset and whether the phone would include Wi-Fi.

Apple appears to have conceded its demand for Wi-Fi capability. The sample iPhone Apple submitted for testing to China’s regulatory authorities last week has Wi-Fi disabled, said Zhang Jun, an analyst at research house Wedge MKI.

China is allowing Wi-Fi on handsets only if they support a domestically developed security protocol. Authorities have approved the first such Wi-Fi handsets in recent weeks.

Still, the handset could finish the tests and receive its network access license within three months, possibly helping speed talks with China Unicom, Zhang said. Sales could then start by Apple’s target period early next year, he said.

Though its sale is currently illegal, the iPhone is already popular among fashion-conscious Chinese urbanites. Unlocked iPhones smuggled from abroad are openly sold beside look-alike clones at Chinese electronics markets. There are already 1 million iPhones in China, consultancy Ovum estimates.

China Unicom could launch the iPhone late this year, though no recent signs of progress have come from its talks with Apple, said Liu Ning, an analyst at BDA, a telecoms research company.

Liu also said Apple had submitted the iPhone to the government’s China Telecommunication Technology Labs, which grants network access licenses.

The iPhone for China may support 3G. An unnamed Apple handset that China recently licensed to use a specified frequency range supports WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), the 3G standard being promoted by China Unicom. The handset, which was listed as approved on a government Web site, appears to be an iPhone.

Apple said in April that it hoped to start iPhone sales in China within the next year.

Tips For Choosing The Best European Cruise

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:26 am

Author: Eurotraveler

When I use the phrase "Best European Cruise" I am not referring to the very best vacation money can buy, but rather the greatest amount of luxury and adventure to be found without slipping the restraints of your budget. As much as we’d like to be able to ignore our accountants and max out our credit cards it is an unrealistic dream, particularly in these difficult financial times. That being said, there is nothing stopping you from finding the best European cruise deal you can with the money you have available to you. Here are a few tips to going about that:

1 - Determine which ports of call you would like to visit. Though the bulk of your time will be spent aboard the ship the highlights of your trip will be the time you spend visiting Europe’s amazing historic cities. If you’ve always wanted to see Rome, or Athens, or Barcelona then you need to plan your itinerary around one or many such destinations. Visiting the Sistine Chapel or St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome might bring you more joy than the rest of your journey combined, so you really need to focus in one this one aspect of your cruise planning more than any other. Don’t just concentrate on the cities in the Mediterranean basin. You can also enjoy wonderful cruises in the Baltic, Black or Caspian Seas. European river cruises are also immensely popular and are a fabulous way to explore inland Europe.

2 - Decide how long you want to be at sea. A European cruise can vary widely in length from a quick 5 day trip to a voyages that last nearly a month. Obviously the longer the cruise the more money you can expect to pay. This is an important consideration in planning your trip. You don’t want to come halfway around the world just to turn around and head home a day after finally getting over your jet lag. On the other hand you don’t want to have to sell all your worldly possessions in order to finance your vacation. Find a compromise that will make the long journey worthwhile without leaving you in the poor house. If no such compromise exists then you might want to consider holding off and taking the trip at a later date.

3 - Figure out what luxuries and amenities you want aboard ship. As I mentioned above the highlight of your trip will be the amazing cities you’ll visit, but don’t forget that much of your time will still be spent aboard ship. You want there to be enough to see and do to keep you from growing bored on your cruise. Find out what kind of entertainment each cruise line offers, what other amenities such as pools, hot tubs, fitness facilities, climbing walls etc. can be enjoyed, and what the dining experience will be like. Depending on the level of luxury the price can fluctuate significantly. Ultimately choosing the best European cruise is in your hands. By following these simple steps you should be able to plan a cruise vacation that you will remember for a lifetime without putting undue financial stress upon yourself and your family.
